A worker died in an accident at the Chancay Port Terminal, a megaport being developed by Hong Kong-based Cosco Shipping Ports on Peru’s Pacific coast, according to a statement from the company on 11th May, Reuters highlights.
The worker was engaged in sanding and painting activities when the incident occurred. Cosco Shipping Ports stated that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and is cooperating with authorities.
As informed, Cosco Shipping Ports began construction of the Chancay port in 2019 with the aim of establishing it as a key hub in the South American Pacific region. However, there has been a dispute over the terms of Cosco’s operations at the port.
In 2021, Peru’s National Port Authority (APN) granted Cosco Shipping Ports exclusive rights to operate the Chancay port, but later acknowledged in March that it lacked the legal authority to do so due to an “administrative error.” APN has requested a judge to nullify the terms of the agreement.
Cosco Shipping Ports has indicated that it anticipates the port to commence operations in November, coinciding with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum’s meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders.
