On October 14, about three dozen tourists were rescued from water after a catamaran sank off the port of Cartagena, Spain.
Namely, on the afternoon of October 14, bystanders called Cartagena’s emergency services dispatchers to report that the tour boat Olé Cuarto was damaged.
After the reports, multiple good samaritan vessels responded immediately and began rescuing the 33 passengers.
In addition, Spanish lifesaving agency Salvamento Maritimo also deployed three rescue boats and a Red Cross response boat to the scene, along with a helicopter.
They carried out an additional followup search to make sure that all were accounted for, and no further survivors were found within the vessel or nearby.
The tourists were delivered safely to the nearby cruise terminal, where first responders provided them with assistance. 14 of the passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment of bruises and hypothermia.
The reason for the vessel’s sinking is not known, and its wreckage will be raised for an investigation.
