The 2nd Annual Green4Sea Forum, a PRO BONO event, successfully completed on 17th of April 2013 in Eugenides Foundation Athens, covering a wide range of Green Shipping and Energy Management issues.
Shipping industry is responsible for the emission of one million tons of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Even though shipping’s contribution to climate change is relatively small, about 3%, green shipping issues are on the debate, not only as a solution to reduce shipping emissions but also to manage fuel savings that will ultimately lead to substantially lower operating costs. During the conference, a panel of 14 global experts presented ways to save energy and focused on a friendly approach to the maritime environment.
The event has been well attended by over 400 delegates at the venue representing more than 185 companies/organisations. The event organized by SQE Marine Group and sponsored by SQE MARINE, SQE ACADEMY, Transmar Shipping, Dorian Hellas, Seamar Management S.A. , Kyklades Maritime Corporation, UK P&I Club, UK Defence Club, ERMA FIRST S.A., Bureau Veritas and supported by MARTECMA, Green Award Foundation, NAMEPA, InterManager, IFSMA, EENMA.
During his welcome address Mr Apostolos Belokas, as the Forum chairman outlined the objectives of this PRO BONO event, including enhancing Energy Efficiency Awareness and promoting Eco- Friendly Practices for the industry.

Session 1 : Green Shipping
Apostolos Belokas, SAFETY4SEA Curator presented feedback from Safety4Sea Energy Efficiency Survey held during the past ten months
Jan Fransen of Green Award Foundation debated on why shipping makes good sense for business
Vasilios Tselentis, Professor of University of Piraeus presented ESPO Tools and Certification for Environmental Port Management
Elias Kariabas of ABS Europe presented latest Ballast Water Management Developments
Konstantinos Stampedakis of Erma First gave a presentation on Ballast Water Treatment Systems Selection and Use
Jessica Röttmer of Green Ship Recycling Services covered current ship recycling developments
Gerhard Aulbert of Germanischer Lloyd presented quality criteria for HazMat Expert Parties involved in Inventory of Hazardous Material and Hazardous Material Surveys.
Session 2 : Energy Management
Professor Harilaos N. Psaraftis from NTUA covered latest regulatory developments and highlighted key issues regarding the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)
Erik Nyhus of DNV presented regulation regarding Shipping Greenhouse Gases
Panos Zachariadis of Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management gave a presentation on eco- friendly solutions for ship design
Rod Lingard of Thomas Miller Hellas focused on the legal and insurance aspects of slow steaming
Dr John Kokarakis of Bureau Veritas gave a presentation covering waste heat recovery and slow steaming
Panayiotis Mitrou of Lloyd’s Register highligted the benefits of using LNG as a marine fuel
Spyridon Zolotas of RINA presented how LNG is considered as a strategic challenge for the Mediterranean Shipping
Both sessions ended with a round table discussion and exchange with the audience.
