A fishing vessel sank during bad weather on July 3, off Honduras’s northern coast. At least 27 fishermen lost their lives, according to Honduras’s military. In addition, nine people are still missing, while 55 others have been rescued.
Commenting on the incident, Jose Domingo Meza, a spokesperson for the military, noted that the vessel’s Capt. Waly started sailing during inappropriate weather for fishing, while the ship was lost at least 40 nautical miles offshore.
What is more, the Caribbean commercial fishermen’s association in Honduras stated that nearby boats were called to go to the scene, in order to to pick up the survivors.
The ship sank near Cayo Gorda, northeast of the easternmost point of the Honduran coast. Furthermore, relevant authorities said that another fishing vessel with 49 men aboard also sank or capsized in the same area earlier, but all were rescued.
