2013 SAFETY4SEA Athens Forum successfully concluded

On October 2nd, in Eugenides Foundation, Athens

The 4^th Annual SAFETY4SEA Forum, a PRO BONO event, successfully concluded on Wednesday 2^nd of October 2013 in Eugenides Foundation Athens. A unique panel of 17 global experts debated a wide range of issues, covering safety and quality regulatory update, maritime security and anti- piracy issues and also best practices in the shipping industry.

The event has been well attended by over 430 delegates at the venue representing more than 220 companies/organisations. The event organized by SQE Marine Group and sponsored by Aspida Maritime Security, Transmar Shipping, Dorian Hellas, Seamar Management SA, The Marshall Islands Registry, MARITECH, CLEAN MARINE, MAGSAYSAY, Hellenic Register of Shipping, T&T Salvage, SQE MARINE, SQE ACADEMY and supported by Steamship Mutual, MARTECMA, Green Award Foundation, NAMEPA, InterManager, IFSMA, EENMA, WISTA Hellas and The American P&I Club

During his welcome address Mr Apostolos Belokas, as the Forum chairman outlined the objectives of this PRO BONO event, including enhancing Maritime Safety Awareness and promoting Best Practices for the industry.

Presentations were given in three sessions as follows:

Session 1 : Safety and Quality Regulatory Update and Experience

Thanos Theocharis, Marshall Islands Registry,covered latest regulatory developments andpresented feedback from the MLC implementation.
Marlon Rono, Magsaysay,presented the MLC challenges from the perspective of the Crew Manager
Apostolos Venizelos, Hellenic Register,analysed the effects of MLC implementation so far.
Dr.Nikos Ventikos, NTUA,focused on the aspects of Behavioural Based Safety.
Ilias Bissias, University of the Aegean,covered issues regarding crisis communications and presented experience feedback from recent incidents.
Capt. Charis Kanellopoulos, MARE Maritime,analysed the process of selecting and using ECDIS on board

Session 2 : Security and Anti-Piracy

George Kiourktsoglou, Greenwich Maritimegave a presentation on the recent anti & counter piracy developments in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Guinea
Panos G.Moraitis, Aspida Maritime Security,covered latest regulatory developments regarding maritime security
Dorothea Ioannou, The American P&I Club,presented how the American P&I Club handles piracy and the use of armed guards issues
Dr. Kyrikos Faraklas, Lloyd’s Register,focused on ISO 28007 which establishes a private maritime security company management systems certification
Capt. John Dickie, IFSMA,highlighted regulatory developments on maritime security

Session 3 : Safety & Quality Best Practices

Apostolos Belokas, SAFETY4SEA.compresented best practices and KPIs to manage fatigue
AlastairEvitt, V. Ships Greece,analysed KPI best practices from ship manager perspective and gave feedback from InterManager
Jan Fransen, Green Award Foundation, gave a presentation on shipping corporate social responsibility
Mauricio M.Garrido, &Salvage LLCcovered issues relevant to safety regulations from the salvor’s perspective
Rod Lingard, UK P&I Club,highlighted best practices in loss prevention
Chris Adams, Steamship Mutual,closed the sessionpresenting grounding loss prevention best practices

All sessions ended with a round table discussion and exchange with the audience.

Finally Apostolos Belokas, Forum Chairman thanked the delegates for their participation, the sponsors for their support and the speakers for their excellent presentations and contribution towards forum objectives.
