Russia’s only aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, was caught on fire on Thursday, December 12, during work in Russia’s Arctic Sea port of Murmansk. Reuters now reports that least one military serviceman was killed and other 12 people were injured.
After catching fire, the ship was successfully evacuated, with emergency services working to tackle the blaze that began in the ship’s hold, according to the United Shipbuilding Corporation.
Reuters reports during the fire-fighting operation, that the body of a military serviceman was found, while the number of people injured in the fire rose to 12, with the majority suffering from intoxication with products of combustion.
Notably, according to TASS, the blaze had started on the upper deck and as thick, black smoke was billowing from the vessel, firefighters were finding it difficult to reach the blaze due to the heavy smoke caused by burning cables.
Recently, a Captain died after a fire erupted on board the Greek-flagged carrier ‘Ore Sudbury’, in Guaiba, Brazil,in late November. The Hellenic Coast informed that the rest of the crew are reported as safe and that no pollution has been noticed either.
The fire was put out by the crew of the ship using their own equipment and it was after the incident when local authorities were informed.
