Personnel of Multi-Role Response Vessel-4402 (BRP Malabrigo) and the Filipino Coast Guard Station Zamboanga responded to a distress call from M/V “Kudos” regarding pirate attacks of unidentified armed men, who were equipped with high powered firearms onboard three motorboats.
The first information regarding the incident came from the ship captain, Chris Paul Maligmat, who revealed that the suspects attempted to board their vessel but the crew immediately responded by splashing boiled water, after which the perpetrators opened fire. The attacks took place 4.4 nautical miles South East off Sibago Island, Basilan yesterday, on February 16.
