24 passengers were injured when an explosion took place onboard a ferry in the maritime terminal of Playa del Carmen in Mexico, while the were disembarking, according to local authorities.
A total of 24 people sustained injuries, as they were affected by loud noise, bruising and earache. Of the 24, 15 people had minor injuries, including five American visitors, who received medical attention at a private hospital.
However, one passenger of Mexican nationality is in a critical situation, as he sustained second and third degree burns in the facial area, and he now is in intensive care.
Despite the injuries, no deaths were reported. Personnel of the Ministerial Police and Experts of the General State Prosecutor’s Office came to the scene to begin an investigation about the incident. Moreover, the Attorney General’s Office will cooperate with other authorities to determine what caused the incident.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the ship belongs to the company Barcos Caribe.
